World War I: It's Impact on the Harbor Communities
This symposium commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end
of World War I, when hostilities ceased on November 11, 1918.
Nowadays, World War I is often overlooked, but it upended
people’s lives and transformed our harbor towns, the country,
and the world in enduring ways.
Speakers will discuss the impact of the war on our local economy
and community. You will hear about the effects on the Port,
shipyard activity, the submarine base, worker housing, the
progress of labor, and how harbor residents contributed to the
war effort through food conservation, the Liberty Loans, and
support for the servicemen and their families.
The human cost will be observed with a biographical roll call of
local casualties and a report on the WW I veterans buried at the
Historic Wilmington Cemetery.
On two Sundays, November 4th and 11th, in coordination with
the symposium, the Muller House Museum will exhibit WW I
items and photographs of San Pedro during the war era. The
museum is located at 1542 S. Beacon Street in San Pedro. Those
who may have artifacts for the exhibit are invited to contact:
