SAN PEDRO CHAMBER AND MEMBER CALENDAR DETAILS |
Santa Cruz Island Voyage with CMA Naturalists
, San Pedro, CA
Saturday, May 19, 2012
8:00 AM
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will lead a trip to Santa Cruz Island. Passengers depart Ventura 8 a.m. from the vessel Island Adventure and will return at approximately 5 p.m.
The fee is $55 per person, $50 FRIENDS members, ($35 under age 12 accompanied by a paying adult). Reservations are required and space is limited.
During the channel crossing, it is not unusual to see dolphins, sea lions and sea birds. We cruise along the coast, then go ashore where participants follow a naturalist-led hike to observe the island’s diverse coastal habitats and panoramic views. Santa Cruz is the largest island off the coast of California, only 19 miles from Ventura.
Santa Cruz represents a miniature California with a variety of rock types as well as diverse flora and fauna that have changed through isolation on the island. The beauty of Santa Cruz is reflected in its many landforms including the highest peaks on the Channel Islands, amazing coastal cliffs and giant sea caves. The island lies on the boundary between cold northern and warm southern waters and hosts unique plant, animal, and marine communities.
The island was originally known as "Limuw" to the resident Chumash Indians. Remnants of Chumash island inhabitants can still be seen in thousands of “shell middens” on the island.
The protection and preservation of these resources, both natural and cultural, is the major mission of the National Park Service and the Nature Conservancy, the two overseers of Santa Cruz Island.
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium exhibits local marine life and is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
