The Port of Los Angeles Waterfront Red Car Line
"The Trolley"

Pacific Electric 1058

San Pedro is the home of the "Big Red Cars". The Port of Los Angeles Waterfront Red Car Line is a 1.5 mile long vintage trolley line connecting San Pedro's World Cruise Center and the Fanfare at San Pedro Gateway with other attractions along the waterfront including 6th Street and the LA Maritime Museum, Ports O' Call, Fisherman's Wharf and 22nd Street.Red Car Map There is a shuttle bus that connects with trolley line to take passangers out to Cabrillo Beach with it's attractions including the pier, tidepools, the Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse, and the Cabrillo Aquarium. The Red Cars operate from 10 AM to 9:30 PM, Friday through Monday. Red Cars also run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday when cruise ships are in Port. A $1 all-day fare includes unlimited rides and is transferable for free rides on the shuttle bus to Cabrillo Beach.

The line is using a former Pacific Electric right-of- way, also used by the Pacific Harbor Line for freight operations, rebuilt to accommodate trolley operations with traditional 600-volt DC overhead trolley wire. Regular operations started on July 19th, 2003 with two new replica railcars carefully patterned after the 1909 Pacific Electric 500-class interurban cars. A third car, Pacific Electric 1058, a 1000-class Interurban car that was restored in the 1960’s from an actual 1907-vintage Pacific Electric car and outfitted with rubber tires and a gasoline engine, has been converted back to a railcar and is available for special operations including charters.

The loving built and carefully restored cars are a tribute to the fine workmanship of Port of Los Angeles craftsmen. The Red Cars have beautiful wooden seats with brass fittings and the wood paneled car interiors with open air windows and vintage product advertisements give one the feel of riding a Pacific Electric Interurban in the 1920's. The Red Cars are fun for the whole family and a great way to see some of the many restaurants, museums, shops and attractions for both visitors and cruise ship passengers before and after their voyage.

The Red Car stations feature ADA-compliant high level platforms that make boarding and alighting easier for everyone and the new cars easily accommodate wheelchairs. Free parking can be found at 22nd Street, Ports O' Call and near the 6th Street station. Parking is also available near the Cruise Center station with the first hour of parking free and following hours at $1 per hour. Come to San Pedro and ride the "Big Red Cars". It is a very economical way to have a day of fun and memories for friends, families, tourists, and visitors!

For a truly romantic evening, try a trip on the "Big Red Car" to see the Fanfare at San Pedro Gateway show from 8 PM to 9 PM. The evening Red Car service, to see the beautiful nighttime performances at the Fanfare Fountain, runs to 9:30 PM. The last car leaves the Cruise Center Station at Gateway Plaza and Swinford Street for the Marina Station at 22nd Street at 9:30 PM.
